UTM hygiene matters
Small inconsistencies break attribution at scale.
Lowercase everything
UTM values are case-sensitive. LinkedIn and linkedin are different sources in GA4. Pick one convention and stick to it.
Be consistent with naming
cpc vs paid vs paid-search for medium will fragment your reports. Document your taxonomy in a shared doc.
QR codes for offline
UTM-tagged QR codes let you attribute foot traffic from print, signage, packaging, and events to specific campaigns — not generic "direct" traffic.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between source and medium?
Source is where the traffic comes from (linkedin, google, newsletter). Medium is the channel type (cpc, social, email, referral). They're complementary — source tells you the publisher, medium tells you the format.
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?
Yes. LinkedIn and linkedin are treated as different sources in GA4 and most analytics tools. Always lowercase your UTM values to keep reports clean.
Should I always set utm_term and utm_content?
Term is optional and useful for keyword-level tracking in paid search. Content is optional and useful for A/B testing creative variants. Skip them if you don't need that granularity.
Where does my UTM data show up?
GA4 traffic acquisition reports, your CRM lead source field, and any analytics tool that reads URL parameters at session start.
How does Pace handle UTM tracking?
Once you've tagged your URLs, Pace shows campaign-level performance via each platform's own conversion tracking — across Google, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Microsoft. Pace doesn't yet stitch UTM-tagged sessions to your CRM, but the platform-side conversion data lives in one Portfolio view so you can compare campaigns without flipping between ad managers.
Compare every tagged campaign in one place.
Once your URLs are tagged, Pace pulls campaign-level performance from Google, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Microsoft into one Portfolio view — so you compare ROAS, CPA, and conversion volume across channels without flipping between ad managers.
